Explanation of The Chart
-
In The Agency Discussions, Bro. A shows his three students a chart he made that compares the usage of the terms agency and free agency over time. The chart is available in the book and the eBook, but the quality is not the best. The chart(s) produced here are better quality renderings and appear in various formats. Feel free to download, print, or share this information.

How to read the Chart(s)
-
The green bars above the centerline represent the frequency of the word agency, while the blue bars below it show the frequency of the term free agency. This allows a visual comparison to be made between the usage of the two terms over time.
The red bars are overlaid on the graph to illustrate the net difference between the two terms---they graphically show which term had the greater usage and by how much. When the red appears above the centerline, that indicates that agency is the more predominant term. When it is below the line, free agency is more dominant. A couple of trend lines are also provided to give a visual representation of the shift from one term to the other.
I designed this graphical representation to compare two similar things and show how they interrelate and change over time. I call it a "Mirror Difference" graph. As far as I know, I designed and created this format although I wouldn't be surprise if something like it has been done before.
About
-
Agency vs. Free Agency (in multiple formats) are charts that I (Matthew Andreasen) created comparing the two terms as used by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The charts were compiled using data from History of the Church and early Church periodicals (Evening and Morning Star, Messenger and Advocate, Times and Seasons), Journal of Discourses, Collected Discourses, Conference Report, conference issues of the Ensign, and conference talks found on the Church’s website (ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Counts are based on context where agency was used in a doctrinal sense as long as it was not a direct scriptural quotation. Because I compiled this information manually, I am solely responsible for its content.
